Frequently asked questions

Private medical insurance covers the costs of private medical treatment, tests, and surgery if you become ill or injured during the policy term. Typically designed for acute, short-term, and curable conditions, PMI offers several benefits beyond what the NHS provides.

You pay a monthly premium for your medical insurance plan. In return, your insurer covers the cost of eligible treatments while the policy is active. Medical Insurance plans are intended to complement NHS services, so routine appointments with your GP would still be through the NHS. The benefits of health insurance are:

  • Avoid  NHS waiting lists
  • Receive the best private healthcare
  • Choose the hospital and where you want to be treated

When it comes to choosing private medical insurance, there are several factors to consider, including:

  • Level of coverage provided.
  • Access to care options.
  • Treatment locations.
  • Your contribution (excess) towards costs.

It’s important to take the time to understand the options available to you to make an informed decision.

Here are some steps to help guide your decision-making process:

  1. Compare the benefits offered by each insurer.
  2. Look at any coverage limits like outpatient cover, diagnostics and hospital list
  3. Take into account your own health needs
  4. Consider additional benefits, like dental cover, mental health or therapies

If your employer has arranged the insurance cover for you, they will have all the necessary information about your policy.

Private medical insurance can be purchased directly from the insurer, through an independent adviser or online.

You can apply for insurance either over the phone, in person, or online.

Usually, people buy an individual private medical insuran to have:

Timely access to healthcare

  • Prompt referral to a consultant
  • Quick admission to the hospital
  • Treatment at a convenient time and place

Choice of healthcare

  • Direct care by a consultant
  • Advanced treatment options, such as access to some cancer drugs that are not available on the NHS

High-quality private clinic and hospital accommodation

  • Privacy of an en-suite room
  • Home amenities, such as TV
  • Comfort and cleanliness

The monthly payment to keep your health insurance plan active is called a premium. These premiums can cost hundreds of pounds a year, depending on your insurer and the coverage plan you choose.

When you go to a hospital, your insurer will cover the cost of treatment up to a certain amount based on your policy, provided you have paid your premium for that month and haven’t reached your maximum out-of-pocket limit for the year.

How is the price of a health insurance policy calculated?

Several factors determine the cost of your health insurance policy:

  • Your age
  • Medical history
  • Postcode
  • Desired coverage
  • Lifestyle choices

Will my premiums increase as I get older?

Normally as you get older your health insurance premiums will increase, because the older you get the more likely you are to claim on your policy. Again, it comes down to your health insurance advisor, an experienced medical advisor can tailor the policy you need.

Underwriting Options

All health insurance providers handle applications using two methods: full medical underwriting and moratorium underwriting.

Full Medical Underwriting

You provide details of your medical history. The insurer might contact your doctor for more information. If you withhold information, your claim may be reduced, denied or your policy cancelled. Pre-existing conditions and related issues might not be covered, either permanently or for a set period.

Moratorium Underwriting

You don’t provide your medical history upfront. The insurer excludes coverage for pre-existing conditions treated, tested, medicated, advised on, or symptomatic in the years before your policy starts. These conditions might become eligible for coverage if you’re symptom-free and don’t seek treatment or advice for them for a continuous period, usually two years, after your policy starts. Some chronic conditions may never be covered.

For claims, insurers may request medical notes to determine coverage. Routine health check-ups for general well-being are disregarded under moratorium terms.

Our professional health insurance brokers will explain the difference between underwriting options.

Making a health insurance claim is easier than you might think. It only takes 4 simple steps to arrange a claim.

  1. Visit Your GP

Unless you have direct access, start by consulting your GP for an assessment and an open referral letter. This allows you to choose a specialist from your insurer’s list. If seeing your GP is difficult, virtual GP services offered by insurers can also provide referrals.

  1. Start Your Claim

Contact your insurer with your policy number and referral letter via app, online or by phone. The insurer will verify your policy details and medical history. If approved, you’ll receive a pre-authorisation number.

  1. Find a Healthcare Provider

Choose a consultant or hospital covered by your policy. Insurers often provide a list of options. You can opt for a standard or extended hospital list, with the latter offering more expensive providers, often in cities like London. A guided consultants list can help save costs by offering high-quality, cost-effective options.

  1. Paying the Bill

After treatment, the hospital typically bills your insurer directly. You’ll need to pay any agreed excess, which your insurer will inform you of during the claims process.

Each provider has a slightly different process, but most allow claims via phone, app, or online, providing flexibility based on your preferences and schedule.

Information on how to make a claim will be included in your welcome pack. Our private medical insurance specialist will guide you through the entire process, from selecting the right insurance to making a claim.

Outpatient

If you are an outpatient, you visit a hospital, consulting room, or outpatient clinic for diagnosis or treatment but do not stay overnight. You come in for routine check-ups, minor procedures, or follow-up appointments. As an outpatient, you receive the medical care you need and leave the facility the same day. This could involve visits for physical therapy, blood tests, minor surgeries and consultations with specialists.

Day Patient

As a day patient, you are admitted to a hospital or a specialised day patient unit for treatment or a procedure that requires medical supervision but does not necessitate an overnight stay. You might need to stay for several hours for your treatment, observation, or recovery, but you are discharged to go home by the end of the day. This is typical if you are undergoing minor surgeries, certain types of therapy, or diagnostic procedures that require a short recovery period under medical supervision

Accident and Emergency (A&E) services are not covered by health insurance. In case of a medical emergency, dial 999 immediately. Emergency services will stabilise you and provide initial care. After stabilisation, you will be transferred to a private wing of an NHS hospital or a private ambulance will transfer you to a private hospital for further treatment. This ensures you receive urgent care promptly, followed by continued treatment in a facility covered by your insurance. Always know your insurance coverage details and emergency procedures to be prepared for any situation.

Private health insurance is available even if you have a pre-existing medical condition, but coverage details vary by insurer and policy. Each insurer has its own list of conditions they classify as pre-existing and different terms for how these conditions are managed.

Some insurers or policies may not cover certain pre-existing conditions at all. Others might impose limitations or exclusions, meaning coverage could be restricted if you need treatment related to the pre-existing condition.

Consulting the best health insurance broker UK can also provide valuable guidance in choosing the best policy for your needs
