Skip long paediatric waits for ENT, orthopaedics and mental health support. We compare child cover from Aviva, Bupa and Vitality and explain what is excluded.
Private Health Insurance for Children UK
UK private health insurance for children typically costs £30–£80/month per child when added to a family policy. Standalone child-only policies are rarer but available from Aviva and Bupa. Common claims: ENT (glue ear, tonsils), orthopaedics (sports injuries), and CAMHS alternatives.
Health Insurance for Children: what the cover actually does
NHS paediatric waiting lists are among the longest in the system — 18+ weeks for ENT, 20+ weeks for orthopaedics, and CAMHS waits that can stretch beyond a year. Private paediatric consultants typically see children within 1–2 weeks, and surgery follows in days rather than months.
Parents adding children to an existing PMI policy usually pay a fraction of adult premiums because children make fewer claims. The exception is child mental health: CAMHS alternatives are expensive, and some policies cap spend at £1,000–£2,500/year. If mental health cover matters, verify limits before buying.
Vitality's 'kids go free' benefit is the most generous on the market — dependent children under 18 are fully covered at no extra premium on qualifying plans. Aviva and Bupa offer competitive child pricing but no blanket free cover.
Child-only PMI is a niche product — most families add children to a joint policy for simpler administration and one renewal date. Standalone child cover makes sense in three scenarios: divorced parents where only one holds PMI, grandparents funding cover for grandchildren, or corporate directors whose employer PMI does not extend to dependents.
CAMHS vs private paediatric mental health is the single most common question we field for child PMI. NHS CAMHS waits routinely exceed 12 months for autism/ADHD assessment and 6-9 months for anxiety/depression pathways. Private paediatric psychology typically starts within 2 weeks — but insurer limits vary wildly (£1,000/yr on entry plans up to fully underwritten unlimited on comprehensive Bupa/AXA plans). Always verify the annual mental health cap before buying.

Indicative monthly cost by scenario
Illustrative only — final premiums depend on age, postcode, excess, hospital list, underwriting and insurer terms at the time of quote.

Which insurers tend to fit best
| Insurer | Fit | Broker note |
|---|---|---|
| Vitality | excellent | Kids go free on qualifying plans — best value if you qualify. |
| Aviva | excellent | Modular; children can have inpatient-only while parents get full outpatient. |
| Bupa | good | Widest paediatric consultant network including Great Ormond Street Partners. |
| AXA | good | Solid paediatric cover; competitive family pricing. |
| WPA | fair | Ethical mutual, strong claims service; fewer paediatric mental health specialists on network. |
| Freedom | fair | Budget-friendly monthly premiums; limited paediatric surgical sites and no CAMHS alternative. |
| The Exeter | limited | Primarily adult-focused; rarely recommended for child cover. |
Before you buy — broker checklist
- Verify child mental health limits — some policies cap at £1,000/year.
- Check paediatric consultant network — Great Ormond Street Partners, Portland Hospital, etc.
- Ask about continuation option at age 18/24 — avoids new underwriting.
- Confirm orthodontic/dental is excluded (it usually is, or heavily limited).
- Review waiting periods for new conditions after policy start.
- For a newborn, ask if there's a free add-on window (Bupa/AXA typically allow newborns to be added within 3 months without underwriting).
PremierPMI broker desk notes
- Vitality's kids-go-free benefit is real but only on certain employer or high-tier retail plans — always confirm eligibility.
- For children with pre-existing asthma, eczema, or ADHD, moratorium underwriting excludes those conditions for two years. Full medical underwriting can remove exclusions but may increase premium.
- Bupa's network includes Great Ormond Street Partners consultants — if complex paediatric surgery is a concern, Bupa often has the deepest bench.
- When a child ages out at 18 (or 24 in full-time education), most insurers offer a continuation option — a new individual policy on the same terms, no re-underwriting. Trigger this in the last 30 days before their birthday or the option lapses.
Common questions
Can I insure a child without insuring myself?
Yes, though child-only policies are less common. Aviva and Bupa both offer them. Premiums are low (~£30–£50/mo) because children claim less.
Is ADHD diagnosis covered?
Private ADHD assessment is typically covered under outpatient mental health benefits. Ongoing medication costs are usually NHS-managed after diagnosis.
Does orthodontics qualify?
Cosmetic orthodontics (braces) is almost universally excluded. Medically necessary jaw surgery may be covered — check policy wording.
How do I add a newborn to my policy?
Most insurers allow newborns to be added within a defined window (typically 30–90 days from birth) without medical underwriting. After that window, standard underwriting applies and any congenital conditions may be excluded. Notify your insurer as soon as the baby is born to preserve the free-add-on right.
Is dental or optical cover included for children?
Standard PMI does not include routine dental or optical. Some insurers (Bupa, WPA) offer dental cash plans as bolt-ons for £8–£15/month per child covering check-ups, hygienist and basic treatment. Optical is usually pay-as-you-go via high-street chains.
What happens when my child turns 18?
Insurers remove children from a family policy at 18 (or 24 if in full-time education living at the policyholder's address). All major insurers offer a continuation option — a standalone policy on the same terms with no fresh underwriting — provided you trigger it in the 30 days before/after the birthday. Miss the window and any conditions treated on the family policy may become pre-existing exclusions.
